Semios Hub

During my time at Semios, as part of the UX team, one of our main projects was the development of a new updated platform called Semios Hub. We took the existing functionality of our legacy desktop platform, and based on feedback from customers, research into data visualization best practices, and industry trends, we upgraded our offerings into something new. A platform that allowed for the flexibility of custom data comparisons and the surfacing of insights in a more intuitive and dynamic way.

Approach

For this project, our primary focus was improving the usability and value provided to our customers by our system. We started the process by interviewing a portion of our users. From these interviews, we created personas, tracked user journeys, and discovered several themes in the requests:

  • Surface actionable items on login (what do I do?)

  • Show trends and actions tied to physical locations (where do I go?)

  • Compare different data types (I want to customize)

  • Clear thresholds and warnings (make it clear what things mean)

  • Improve mobile and tablet offerings (let me take the data with me)

With these findings, we began the process of ideating and developing wireframes. We collaborated closely with the product and development teams to ensure we accounted for scale and scope while delivering an original and effective design. We settled on a map-based approach, prioritizing the rapid surfacing of relevant data over the previous approach of large amounts of dense data.

Usability Testing

Once we finalized our initial designs and developed functional prototypes, we moved into usability testing. We implemented a standardized testing protocol that encouraged participants to freely explore the prototype, followed by a series of tasks designed to reflect typical use cases based on their persona. This approach allowed us to observe natural interactions, uncover pain points, and identify areas of confusion, without team intervention, ensuring authentic feedback. After multiple rounds of testing and iteration, we refined the designs to a point where they were ready for launch.

Final Results and Takeaways

The final product was well received by our customers, thanks in large part to our transparency and commitment to incorporating their feedback. Post-launch, we continued to refine the experience, focusing on simplifying workflows for the majority of users who needed only basic functionality, while preserving the advanced features valued by our super users. Taking this product from initial concept to release was an incredible learning experience and a rewarding end-to-end design journey.
